When I sat down with Shekar Raman for this episode of A Healthier, Happier You, I expected a conversation about AI and retail technology.

What I didn't expect was a discussion about bringing back something we've quietly lost.

Personal relationships.

There was a time when the owner of your neighborhood grocery store knew your name, remembered what you bought, and anticipated what you needed before you asked. As retail grew larger and more automated, those relationships naturally faded.

According to Shekar, AI has the opportunity to bring them back.

As CEO and Founder of Birdzi, Shekar is helping retailers use artificial intelligence to understand customers on an individual level, turning data into meaningful, personalized shopping experiences. Rather than replacing the human element, the technology is designed to recreate it—only now it can happen across thousands of stores and millions of shoppers simultaneously.

One of the most fascinating parts of our conversation centered on what comes next.

Shekar believes the future of retail won't simply be personalized recommendations. It will be AI agents that actively shop on our behalf. Imagine receiving a notification that you've run low on everyday essentials, seeing that they're currently on sale at your favorite grocery store, and approving the purchase with a single tap. The shopping experience becomes proactive instead of reactive.

That future, however, depends on something far less glamorous than artificial intelligence.

Data.

Throughout the conversation, Shekar repeatedly emphasized that AI is only as powerful as the information behind it. Retailers eager to embrace the latest technologies first need to ensure they have accurate, organized, and actionable customer data. Without that foundation, even the most sophisticated AI models can't deliver meaningful results.

Another important takeaway is that technology adoption isn't always about willingness.

Retailers understand the value of AI-driven personalization, but many operate in environments where implementing new technology takes significant time and resources. Success isn't simply about building smarter platforms—it's about making those platforms easier to adopt and integrate into existing operations. Reducing friction, Shekar explains, is just as important as increasing capability.

Perhaps the biggest lesson from our conversation is that AI isn't changing the goal of retail.

It's changing how businesses achieve it.

The objective has always been to understand customers, earn their loyalty, and create better shopping experiences. Today's technology simply allows retailers to accomplish that at a scale that wasn't possible before.

This episode offers a thoughtful look at where retail is headed and why personalization is becoming one of the industry's most important competitive advantages.

Because the future of commerce isn't just about selling products.

It's about understanding the people buying them.
